Planning a Music Curriculum

About This Resource

The Quality Music Education Framework was developed by Associate Professor Neryl Jeanneret, (Melbourne Graduate School of Education) for the Victorian Department of Education and Training. It provides an evidence base to support Victorian school leaders to plan and strengthen the effectiveness of their school music programs by giving consideration to six characteristics of quality music education:
  • engagement
  • excellence
  • creativity and activity
  • student-centred learning
  • progression
  • authenticity.

Musical Futures and the QMEF

Here at Musical Futures International, we know from our work in schools across the world that no two music programs are ever the same.  That’s as a true of a Musical Futures-based program as it is of band programs.

But despite those differences what’s being learned and taught is still music and more often than not these are planned with similar ends in mind regardless of which approach teachers choose or the content through which learning is delivered.

The Quality Music Education Framework was developed for the Victorian Department of Education and it is a tool that can be used to examine any of the key elements of programs found in successful, high quality programs.  It focuses on areas for consideration for anyone planning or delivering a music program, for example:

  • The learning environment and resources
  • The extent to the program is student centred
  • The pedagogy on which is based
  • Progression that is available to learners

We think the QMEF is an accessible and comprehensive tool that will help you to:

  • Reference the current status of your own programs
  • Set some future goals or objectives for your program
  • Assist in your communication to leadership about your music program
  • Support evaluation and assessment within your music program
